MARTYN MOXON wants England hopeful Adam Lyth to relax and put a potential Test match debut to the back of his mind when he returns to Yorkshire colours this weekend.

Lyth, along with fellow internationals Jonny Bairstow, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid, are all available to face Hampshire in the LV= County Championship at Headingley, starting on Sunday.

All four have been with England in the Caribbean since early April, but did not play any of the three Test matches.

In Lyth’s case, he missed out on the opener’s berth to Jonathan Trott, who only reached double figures once in six innings - 59 in Grenada - and has since retired from international cricket.

That means the 27-year-old Yorkshire opener is the next cab off the rank ahead of the forthcoming home series against New Zealand and then Australia later this summer.

Lyth has had an exceptional 12 months for his county, topping 1,400 Championship runs last summer and adding a first-innings 113 against the MCC in Abu Dhabi in March.

“He mustn’t put pressure on himself thinking he’s got to get runs to get picked for England,” said Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket and an ex-England opener.

“I don’t think he will do that because he’s mature enough now to just get on with the job, bat and get as many runs as he can.

“But I’m sure we will be reminding him, ‘just go and bat the way you have done last season and in Abu Dhabi, and the rest will look after itself ’.

“Clearly, Trotty’s retirement opens up a spot, and it would appear he’s in the box seat. But we’ll have to wait and see on that, it’s down to the selectors. Hopefully he can get runs when he plays for us.”

Lyth only batted once in a match on tour in the Caribbean, scoring 23 in a warm-up clash with a St Kitts XI on April 8, before the first Test.

And Sunday’s fixture with newly promoted Hampshire will be his only match action before the two- Test series against New Zealand at Lord’s, starting May 20, and at Headingley on May 29.

“He would have been delighted to be on the tour, but whether it’s had a positive or detrimental effect on him, we’ll only know at the weekend - whether he’s in form or not,” said Moxon.

“That’s the only worry I have. Nets don’t replicate matches. He’s lacking match practice, so we’ll just have to hope he can start where he left off for us in Abu Dhabi.

“It’s going to be the same with all four of them, really.

“We’ve got an important game on Sunday, and we’re hoping they will be match ready rather than expecting them to be.”

Lyth’s hundred in the champion county fixture in Abu Dhabi was his eighth first-class in 12 months.

He has scored 15 in all during a career which started with a score of 31 against Loughborough University at Headingley in 2007.
