GLENN MAXWELL will play LV= County Championship cricket for Yorkshire this summer.

The Australia limited overs batting all-rounder and recent World Cup winner will take over the overseas reins from India’s Cheteshwar Pujara and fill in for injured compatriot Aaron Finch.

Maxwell is currently completing his Indian Premier League commitments with Kings XI Punjab, with their last group match on May 16.

Kings XI are bottom of the IPL table and all but out of contention for the knockout stages.

The 26-year-old was signed in late January to play in Yorkshire’s forthcoming NatWest T20 Blast campaign alongside fellow Victorian and former housemate Finch.

He was due to fill his time around Twenty20 matches with second XI red ball cricket.

But White Rose director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon has revealed: “When Glenn signed for us, we agreed with him that he would cover for Aaron should he not be available to play Championship cricket for any reason. We will honour that agreement.

“It looks as though Glenn’s team aren’t going to qualify for the latter stages of the IPL. He will come as soon as that stint has finished, but we are just waiting until that’s been absolutely confirmed.”

Pujara was signed as the replacement for Finch until late May, but Yorkshire’s overseas plans were disrupted when the Australian tore his left hamstring on April 14, with Cricket Australia ruling him out for up to 12 weeks.

But it is hoped that Finch will recover quicker, with reports in Australia suggesting that his plan is to be back on the field within two months.

Maxwell missed out on selection for Australia’s Test squads for tours to the Caribbean and England when they were selected at the end of March.

“It’s a tragedy that we can’t play him in every game, but watch this space,” said Cricket Australia chairman of selectors Rod Marsh at the time.

Maxwell was then selected in Australia ‘A’s four-day squad for a tour to India, which runs through July.

Maxwell has only played 31 first- class matches, including three Test matches, during his career since debuting for Victoria in February 2011. He averages 40.39, and has scored four hundreds with a best of 155 not out.

But he only batted once for Victoria during their most recent Sheffield Shield campaign, against Western Australia at the WACA in December when he scored 24.

“He’s been a victim of circumstance,” said Moxon. “He’s not had a lot of opportunity to play red ball cricket because of his extensive involvement in Australia’s ODI and Twenty20 teams. With the talent he’s got, it’s just a matter of him needing to play, and I’m sure he will do well.

"He’s got too much talent for him not to play well in red ball cricket.”

Pujara will play his fourth Championship match for Yorkshire, starting on Sunday, when they host Hampshire at Headingley.

Yorkshire have announced only single seats, restricted view and very restricted view tickets are available for next month’s T20 Blast Roses clash against Lancashire.

The North Division clash will take place at Headingley under lights on Friday, June 5, at 6.30pm.
