Yorkshire’s bowlers were forced to remain patient this afternoon as Leeds/Bradford captain Will Vanderspar passed 50 to fashion some kind of recovery from 30-4.

The White Rose county have still enjoyed by far the better of proceedings on day one of this three-day fixture at Headingley, although the students will be reasonably satisfied that a lunchtime score of 30-4 has turned into 129-8 from 49 overs at tea.

Vanderspar, their new captain this summer, came in with the score at 20-2 before lunch, and he has shared in partnerships of 20 for the fifth wicket, 41 for the sixth and 31 for the seventh. He will resume on 58 not out after tea.

His sixth-wicket alliance came with Harry Rouse, who made 16, while he and Alex MacQueen united for the seventh.

The four wickets to fall this afternoon were Andy Laws lbw to Steve Patterson, Rouse bowled by Jack Brooks, MacQueen superbly caught at second slip by Adam Lyth off Liam Plunkett and Charlie MacLeod bowled by Adil Rashid.

Brooks, Patterson and Plunkett now have two wickets apiece.
