Hunters York Cricket League celebrate centenary in 2012

The Hunters York & District Senior League will be celebrating its centenary year in 2012 and a series of special matches and functions are planned.

The league’s management has decided to adopt the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as its nominated charity and will be arranging fund-raising sessions throughout the year for the worthy cause.

The events calendar includes a president’s invitation dinner on February 17 and a mid-summer dinner/dance as well as the traditional annual league dinner presentation night in October.

Various merchandise will be available, including commemorative centenary ties, sweaters and casual shirts and the league handbook will be enlarged to include club profiles and extensive league records.

One of the highlights of the year will be a match against the MCC at Scarborough which is provisionally fixed for Wednesday, July 18. The league will also play against the RAF under-25 team at Sheriff Hutton Bridge on Wednesday, May 16, while the same venue is to host a match against a Caribbean XI later in the year. This game will also feature a tea-making contest to enable the league clubs’ tea-ladies to display their talents in a fun-type competition.

The league’s founder member clubs – Thirsk, Easingwold, Sessay and Ripon – will be invited to stage the various cup finals and representative games. Details of these have yet to be finalised.

The celebration year will start on New Year’s Day when York Cricket Club will stage a match between a league XI and a team selected from within the host club.

This will start at 10.30am with a lunch break at around 12.30pm.

The host club will be providing appropriate food for the visiting throng and spectators will be able to enjoy the spectacle of 22 players performing in wintry conditions from the warmth and comfort of an excellent bar area at Clifton Park.
