10:04am Monday 12th September 2011 in York Senior League By Albert Pattison
THE season ended on damp squib for champions Woodhouse Grange just hours after they received the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League premier divison trophy.
Grange skipper Steve Burdett was presented with the trophy by immediate past-president George Myerscough before their final match against Goole Town.
Rain and bad light caused an abandonment in the 46th over when Grange needed 21 runs to win with seven wickets in hand. However, it did mean Woodhouse maintained their unbeaten record.
Needing points in their bid to avoid relegation, Goole’s batsmen put up a decent show in making 194-9, with Neil Foster hitting 57.
Dave Suddaby claimed 6-64 for the 11-time champions.
Nick Hadfield (64) and Chris Bilton (50) then made half-centuries in response.
Mike Burdett was 27 not out and poised to lead the chase for the remaining 21 runs when the contest ended.
A resounding nine-wicket victory over Clifton Alliance earned Beverley Town the runners-up spot – their highest-ever position in the Senior League. They will receive the Costcutter Trophy at the league’s dinner next month.
Simon Roe claimed 6-84 as Alliance totalled 178-9.
Beverley openers Jamie Mitchell (66no) and Peter Groves (39) led the reply and John Fisher (59no) finished things off.
Fenner’s hopes of pulling off a relegation escape at Easingwold were wiped away by long-serving home batsman Paul Skilbeck, who hit 108.
Dan Copeland (32) and Andrew Dawson (41) took Easingwold to a total of 225-9.
Paul Redshaw’s 4-50 helped dismiss the Hull side for 158 to end their premier division ranking.
Stamford Bridge survived an horrific collapse which saw them slip from 120-4 to 127-9 before they managed to edge to a winning 133-9 after pegging Heworth to 130-9.
Bridge’s Steve Sergeant took 5-37 in a 20-over spell and he then made 31 as he and skipper Matt Beckett (44) took Bridge to 120-4.
Tom Forsdyk’s 6-48 caused panic as Stamford lost five wickets for seven runs before edging to a one-wicket win.
Sessay protected a moderate score of 147-8 to gain a seven-run victory at Studley Royal. Joe Watson made 54 for Sessay, while Mark Wilkie (3-24) and Steve Langstaff (3-25) helped stifle Studley.
York were bowled out for 95 by Dunnington’s Dave Johnson (5-48), and Dunnington skipper Paul Miles led his side home with 56 not out.
