HULL was the place to be for those who like their cricket with plenty of drama – with the contests on either side of Chanterlands Road North producing thrilling finishes in Hunters York District Senior League division one.

Callum Hellwig’s match-winning six off the final ball gave Hull Zingari a much needed win as they looked to close the gap on leaders Sewerby at the top.

Visitors Dringhouses built their total of 211-4 around an unbeaten 90 from Steve Lingard, with Chris Evans (41) and George Wilson (30no) also making telling contributions.

Jack Story (30) and Gary Abdoll (52) had both departed for the home side by the time Hellwig faced the final ball knowing nothing but a maximum would do.

Had it not been for Hellwig’s heroics just across the way then the headlines would more than likely have gone to Hull, who hung on by eight runs to inflict a first defeat of the season on table-toppers Sewerby.

The hosts, who began the day second bottom, were indebted to Tom Jennings (62) and Tom Wilkinson (58) who fought hard against Steve Janney (4-40) and Ben Traves (3-43) to take the total up to 178.

Gavin Wilkinson (3-50) and Fergus Wilkinson (3-29) kept the visitors in check and eventually bowled them out for 170, which included a top score of 58 from Sam Wragg.

Ashley Griffin (100) marked his recent return to Harrogate with a century as the visitors scored 272-7 at Norwood Park against Beverley Town.

The total also included 71 from Benjamin Bartlett and Jordan Marshall’s 35, while Tommy Hudson (3-56) picked up three wickets.

James Clark went one better when the home side responded, taking 4-28. Tommy Hudson made 34 but it was Kieran Simpson’s unbeaten 60 which cause the greatest frustration as he held out to prevent the visitors leaving with maximum points.

Those who claim that cricket has become a batsman’s game may well have a point, but that certainly wasn’t the case at Elm Park where 18 wickets fell for less than 200 runs.

Home side Heworth toiled for 48 overs to reach 112-8 – their skipper Neil Martin top scoring with 23 and the side losing five wickets for just nine runs at one stage.

Openers Sam Ryan (22) and Nat Cutts (22) looked to have set Knaresborough on the path to a comfortable victory but Steve Lawrence (4-28) and Martin Boothroyd (5-18) had other ideas, with the visitors last eight wickets contributing just 33 runs to a total of 79 all out

Hornsea came away from Selby with their first win since the opening day but the success was hard earned.

The home side scored 212-6 with Matt Hoyle (77) ably supported by Gareth Roberts (43) and Lee Wild (44).

The visitors’ response was lead by a half-century from Ashley McKinley (53) and included 30 from Jonathan Fisher and 35 from Mark Battye – the trio’s contribution key to a victory with a couple of wickets in hand.

The day’s other match between Folkton & Filxton and Ripon was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
