YORK'S Toby Giddings bowled his side to victory over Driffield Town as the Hunters York & District Senior League season got underway.

The teenager finished with figures of 7-23 as the visitors were dismissed for 143 in reply to the home side's total of 222-7, which included 69 from Finlay Bean and 40 from Ben Robinson, with Nicky Johnson picking up 5-66.

Jordan Caley top-scored in the match with 67 but the rest of Town's line-up were unable to support his efforts as the hosts ran out winners by 79 runs.

Whitkirk, runaway Division One champions in 2016, going through the entire season unbeaten, learnt the hard way that they are unlikely to have things all their own way having moved up a division as they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Beverley Town.

Matthew Mudd (5-45) and Jamie Roe (3-26) combined to dismiss the visitors for 130, of which Matthew Webb scored 84.

Harry Gamble (71) was the only Town batsman to be dismissed, leaving Mike Cooke (45no) to lead the side to an emphatic victory.

Malton & Old Malton, who were promoted alongside Sessay, also suffered defeat, going down at Studley Royal by 79 runs.

James Clarkson top-scored for the hosts with 54 out of 241-7, which also included solid contributions from Dan Craven (46), Ian Dixon (40) and Rob Mackle (39), while Oliver Gilbank did his best to restrict the scoring, taking 3-34.

Mike Linsley (49) and Tom Bamby (47) replied for the away side but Clarkson capped an outstanding all-round performance, adding figures of 6-32 to his earlier half-century.

Two teams with genuine promotion aspirations went head to head when Sessay, who finished third last year, played host to Dunnington, who are sure to be in the hunt for an immediate return to the top flight.

It was the home side who came out on top in a somewhat one-sided contest, reaching their target of 180 for the loss of just two wickets, with Mark Wilkie (68) and Joe Watson (65no) providing the majority of the runs.

Jack Bolam (49) had earlier top-scored for the visitors but the more telling contribution came from Stephen Wagstaff with 5-37.

Elsewhere, Pickering beat Castleford by four wickets, and Bolton Percy were victors over Goole Town by 146 runs.
