BOLTON Percy Cricket Club are mopping up and counting the cost after their ground was swamped with floodwater.

The water engulfed their pitch and pavilion of the Hunters York Senior League Division One club after a sluice which protects the village was closed to keep out the rising waters of the River Wharfe.

It was four metres deep at the worst point and penetrated the club's scorebox where ground machinery was submerged in water.

In the pavilion, fridges in the kitchen and bar area were damaged while carpets, doors and heaters.

The club secretary Bill Preacher is hoping that the club will be able to secure assistance towards the cost of replacing the damaged items from the England & Wales Cricket Board and Yorkshire Cricket Board Emergency Funding.

Rob Richtering, managing secretary of the Hunters York & District Senior League, said: "Our thoughts are with the Bolton Percy club at this time and will provide whatever help and assistance we can as they cope with this dreadful situation.

"With all the flooding in the York area we have only so far been made aware of two clubs suffering problems. In addition to Bolton Percy, Clifton Alliance have suffered damage to their nets.

"I am sure all member clubs will offer support and assistance to those clubs experiencing difficulties. I was delighted to see on social media that Clifton Alliance's near-neighbours Acomb have offered them the use of their nets."

Richtering added: "If any other clubs have been affected by the flooding in any way they should contact the league so that we can advise them of the available help and sources of emergency funding. We are only to ready to help those who have been affected."
