WOODHOUSE Grange Cricket Club became the most successful side in Davidstow Village Cup history as they made sure their final visit to Lord's was a victorious one.

The Sutton-on-Derwent side, skippered by Nick Hadfield, defeated Cambridgeshire outfit Foxton by 19 runs to defend their crown at the home of English cricket.

Batting first, Grange scored a superb 256-2 as they bid to win back-to-back finals following their victory over Great And Little Tew 12 months ago.

Chris Bilton top-scored with 65 not out but there were also tremendous efforts from Hadfield (64), Andrew Bilton (60) and Tom Young (40 not out) as Foxton were set an imposing target on a good batting track.

Grange had posted 120 before the first wicket fell and, after Hadfield - competing in his sixth final - was out, Chris Bilton and Young accelerated the Woodhouse innings significantly.

Young brought up their 50 partnership, in 37 balls and just 23 minutes, with a huge six and Bilton's half-century came in 49 balls as the champions scored 110 runs in the final ten overs.

Foxton's response revolved around the form of hard-hitting batsman Cei Sanderson. While wickets fell around him early on, the southern side were still in with a shot while he remained at the crease.

But he departed for 74 in the 32nd over when caught in the deep off the bowling of Chris Suddaby when attempting successive sixes. His runs had come from 98 balls with nine fours and two maximums.

It was a wicket that would allow Woodhouse to canter in for victory.

It was the fourth time in seven appearances, since their first in 1995, that a Grange skipper had lifted the cup in front of the famous Lord's pavilion - putting them at the top of the list of teams to have won the competition.

With the club having qualified to play in the restructured Yorkshire Premier League next season, they will no longer be eligible to play in the Village Cup - setting their sights instead on becoming national club champions.
