JUBILANT captain Steve Burdett hailed Woodhouse Grange’s latest conquest as their greatest achievement.

Despite wins in the national village trophy at Lord’s and numerous trophies in the York and district cricketing arena, Burdett was in no doubt.

Sunday’s one-wicket triumph over Bradford League champions Cleckheaton in the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy was declared by the skipper, to be the best ever in the history of the Sutton-on-Derwent-based club.

After a very wet Saturday, the club’s ground-staff performed miracles to get the cup tie on.

Cleckheaton won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat - a decision they soon regretted as they were reduced to 27-5 in the face of accurate seam bowling by Burdett’s 4-31 and two wickets from Andrew Horner.

The Woodhouse fielding was tack-sharp epitomised by a terrific run-out completed by Chris Suddaby.

Partial recovery came from Curtis Free (30) and Mally Nicholson (20), but restricting them to 126 was a great achievement by Woodhouse Grange.

Batting was no easier when the home side replied. In-form Chris Bilton contributed 27, but leg-spinner Tanzel Altaf weaved a spell with 4-27.

Number five Tom Young batted confidently and, with the last man partner, he hit two sixes off the last three balls to finish 55 not out and take Woodhouse to the slender victory at 129-9.

They will host Elsecar or Methley in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, Grange’s National Village Cup game against Addingham next Sunday has been postponed.
