WOODHOUSE Grange Cricket Club are one step away from a sixth Davidstow National Village Cup final.

Nick Hadfield's men beat Sessay by 12 runs at the last eight stage of the competition at their home ground at Sutton-on-Derwent.

Batting first in a low scoring match, skipper Hadfield's 86 not out helped the Hunters York & District Senior League premier division leaders to 159-6 from their 40 overs, despite Liam Carver's 3-36 for Sessay.

It then looked like Sessay would win comfortably as Jacob Spencer led the fightback as he scored 40, alongside Joe Watson, who made 34, and Mark Wilkie, who added 25.

However, in the latter stages of the match, Grange upped the pressure in the field to support some ruthless bowling as Steve Burdett took 3-26 and man of the match Hadfield captured 3-23.

Sessay closed on 147-8 from their allocated 40 overs, sending Woodhouse Grange into the last four by a dozen runs.

Grange are now one win away from a trip to the home of cricket, Lord's, and they now travel to Milford Hall, in Staffordshire, on Sunday, August 2 for their semi-final encounter.

Woodhouse Grange club secretary David Farmer said: "It could really have gone either way, but tight bowling and fielding caused wickets to fall under the pressure."

The feat of a clean sweep of six trophies is still very much on the cards for Woodhouse Grange.

The reigning champions are top of the Senior League premier division, they are in the final as they defend the Minster Engineering Senior Charity Cup, and they lead the way in the Foss Evening League division one in an attempt to retain the title.

Also, they have already engraved their names on the Junior Charity Cup and were crowned Sawkill Cup champions for a fourth successive year.
