THE Pilmoor Evening Cricket League season edged past the half-way point with one of its youngest players making an immediate impact.

Second division leaders Crayke gave an open-age debut to eight-year-old Joe Wright and he claimed a wicket in his first over as Crayke beat Raskelf.

Drew Walker (50 retired), Jamie Perkins (45) and Simon Lewis (20) lifted Crayke to 149-4.

Simon Davill made an unbeaten 33 out of 111-8, in which debutant Wright made that superb start.

There was a low-scoring encounter at Newburgh against division one leaders Thirsk, who still prevailed to open up a six-point advantage at the head of the tier.

Newburgh never recovered from losing Rob Proudley to the second ball of the game. Although brothers Ben and Joe Walker provided some resistance in scoring 14 and 12 respectively, Newburgh still subsided to 53 all out with Ross McAndrew taking 3-14 and Ben Elders 3-7.

Thirsk also found batting difficult against John Thornton (2-4) and Jason Sargent (2-11), but the efforts of Stuart Christon, top scorer with 15, and Mark Cook (12 not out), took them to victory at 54-6.

There was a close-fought encounter at Sessay where visitors Helperby took first innings, Rohan Blandford (58) and James Hardy with 31 not out doing most to take them to 128-3.

Sessay’s reply was well led by Nick Thorne before he went for 58. Although Matthew Wass also contributed with 28, Sessay could not find the boundary in the later stages and, needing 12 from the final over, only seven runs were notched.

In a close duel at Clifton Alliance, Easingwold posted a more than useful 146-6, with Dan Copeland making 39 and M Williams 26.

Bob Taylor’s 3-30 was the best return for Clifton.

Jason Gatus (20), Matt Phillips (31) and Rob Thorpe (26) kept Clifton in the hunt against Harry Elliot (2-23) and Tommy Langstaff (3-32). But Alan Barton (26 not out) guided Clifton to the brink of victory, which was secured off the last ball by Bob Taylor’s scrambled single.

Acomb batted first against Sheriff Hutton Bridge and made 104-8, A Green and Leon Sacks each making 30, while Mark Fisher (2-22) and Jamie Hopper (2-18) had the best returns for Bridge.

Adam Fisher with 41 and Dave Phillips with 33 then took Bridge to a winning 105-3.

Stillington lost their unbeaten division two record when they fell to Huby, who gained their first win of the season.

Huby made 137-7, with significant contributions from Mike South (39 not out), Andrew Ball (26) and Tom Piercy, whose 28 included 24 taken off one over by Wayne Linton, who still finished with 4-47.

Stillington’s reply was led by Jack Cartwright (54), Rob Steele (27) and Carl Simpson (23), while wickets fell to Andrew Sugden (2-18) and Chris Cundall (3-9). Stillington failed to score the four they needed from the final delivery.
