GOLDEN oldie Geoff Deighton received a standing ovation at the Foss Evening Cricket League's annual awards evening.

The inspirational 81-year-old Retreat II player was named Division Three Player of the Year.

Deighton, who also plays for Bishopthorpe II in the HPH York Vale League, confirmed that he would be donning his whites again next summer.

He has been playing cricket continually since 1948 – a playing career spanning 68 years.

It was the first time that the Foss Evening League has rewarded its top performers in each division.

Eddie Oliver (Bubwith) won the division one honour and Salman Syed (Retreat) took the prize in division two.

The team trophies were handed out to Bubwith (Division One champions), Yapham (Division Two champions) and Tang Hall Tigers (Division Three champions).

The awards, which formed part of the Vale league's end of season celebrations, were presented by league chairman Mike Wellock.
