EIGHT of the 11 Foss Evening Cricket League fixtures failed to start.

Heworth conceded to Stamford Bridge, which gave the Battle Axes the chance of stealing the division one runners-up spot if they beat Londesborough Park next week.

Londesborough, however, could still win the championship if they were to beat Stamford Bridge and York turn over leaders Woodhouse Grange.

In division two, Pocklington beat hosts The Retreat. The visitors posted 131-7 with Ted Donkin carding 43 and skipper Alex Downey 31 in response to all-rounder Salman Syed’s 3-29.

Syed made 30, Alastair Byers 32 and Danny Cameron 26 not out, but it was not enough as Retreat fell five runs short.

Dunnington Academy were jubilant at the news their match against Askham Bryan had fallen foul of the weather as it ensured that they would claim promotion as division three champions.

They will be joined by either Thixendale or Aviva Vikings, both of whom were relegated last season, with Thix currently holding the advantage by one point.

The Retreat II picked up a third win of the season as they played through persistent rain at York RI. The visitors notched 102-6 with Ed Smith making 32, backed by 79-year-old Geoff Deighton’s 21. Smith then starred with the ball, taking 3-15, while Chris Thompson took 2-18 as York RI fell short at 84-7.
