Para Games hit Goalball in York

GOALBALL, one of the sports that took the Paralympic Games by storm, will be on show today in a York open day.

York St John Inclusive Activity Club is holding a free goalball open day between 12.15pm and 2pm in the sports hall for potential players, coaches, officials and anyone interested in the sport to go along and learn more about it.

Goalball is played by visually impaired athletes who wear black-out masks. Two teams propel a ball across a marked rectangular court, each team attempting to roll it across the opponent’s goal line while the other team attempts to prevent this from happening.

The game is played with a bell ball made of hard rubber with holes in it, so players can hear the ball as it moves.

The open day at York St John University has been organised in partnership with Goalball UK to help build on the popularity the sport gained at London 2012.
