York beat champions Barnsley in Volleyball Premier League

YORK toppled reigning champions Barnsley 3-2 in the Women’s Yorkshire Volleyball Premier League at York College.

York won a pulsating first set 25-19, thanks to a run of six serves from Spanish player Cristina Galvez.

Barnsley bounced back in the second set and forced York to call a time-out when 8-2 down, but York hit back to lead 14-11 en route to a 25-20 win.

The visitors took the next two sets 25-11 and 25-18 to force a fifth-set tie break.

York led 8-6 and then reached match point at 14-11, but Barnsley hit back to level at 14-14 to set up a nail-biting finish.

However, after a time-out, York managed to seal a 16-14 success.

York will host North Riding Eagles on Monday.

Meanwhile, York’s men’s premier team take on Garforth tomorrow.
