Motorsport: Victory vital for Guy Smith

Defending champion Guy Smith starts the American Le Mans Series finale on Saturday knowing victory is vital if he is to retain the drivers’ championship.

Smith and American co-driver Chris Dyson begin the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, the tenth and final round of the series, 13 points behind leaders Klaus Kraf and Lucas Luhr.

The East Yorkshire racer said: “All we can do is go flat out for a victory – but even then the destiny of the title is out of our hands as it depends on the result Klaus and Lucas post.

“I have never managed to win outright at Petit, but have posted second and third place finishes and would obviously love to climb the top step but, whatever, I always have fun at Petit.”

The 2012 season is Smith’s eighth with Dyson Racing and he has scored 60 top-five placings in that time.
