Snooker: Fulford's Lauren Husband framed in club history

Fulford’s narrow 4-3 loss to Acomb in the York Conservative Clubs’ Slater Cup Snooker Pairs League produced a historic moment.

The Fulford club made history by introducing their first female player Lauren Husband, who together with her husband Chris potted consistently for an 85-12 points win to halt an Acomb side who had surged 4-0 ahead.

Defending champions Heworth moved four points clear after topping Bootham 5-2.

The teams shared the first four games, but Heworth countered to secure the match with two close successes and the aggregate by a mere ten points.

Unprepared tables turned out to be a major disadvantage when Bootham ‘A’ hosted Acomb in the Faber Shield Billiards League.

Acomb whitewashed the home team 6-0 as Garry Robinson (36 break), Trevor Ventress (34), Adrian Barraclough (26), John Ashwell and Paul Holmes, who held off Jeff Brown (35) to win by seven points, totally dominated and easily gained the aggregate.

Bootham then lost their next match to Fulford, but the 5-1 margin of victory was a flattering one as the hosts could have nicked a draw.

Fulford’s winners were Colin Neal, Wayne Puleston, Alan Reed and Terry Ward, with Chris Dower (22) halting the whitewash.

Acomb’s winning run continued with a 5-1 success over Bootham ‘B’ in a match much closer than suggested by the final score.

Gary Robinson put Acomb ahead only for Ian Robinson to level.

But Acomb’s unbeaten start to the season was sustained by Holmes (22), Barraclough (24, 22) and Ken Bowser.
