Hockey: Acomb Men’s I win at Boston Spa

AFTER a week’s absence, Acomb Hockey Club men’s I rattled up an impressive 3-2 Yorkshire League division four away-day win at Boston Spa II.

Missing several players, Acomb were down to a bare XI, and at half-time the teams were still deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half, Boston got the opener, capitalising on a poor clearance and a missed tackle. It was the spur Acomb needed.

The Tangerines levelled through Dave Richardson deftly steering a great cross into the net before Ryan Forster got on the scoresheet with a similar goal, this time coming in from the right.

Then, from a penalty corner, Forster followed in Richardson’s weighted strike to tip it up over the Boston Spa ’keeper, who had gone to ground in anticipation of the first shot. Acomb were set to cruise to victory but the home side would not go down without a fight.

They won a penalty corner and trimmed the arrears when the ball slipped between Craig Brown’s feet.

Boston applied severe pressure in the last five minutes but Acomb, inspired by man-of-the-match Dave Brown, held firm.

Three wins on the spin were posted by Acomb men’s II, who toppled division six north visitors Bradford III 4-2.

Goals came from Rob Kendrew, man-of-the-match Luke Yates, Paul Wicker and David Timmins, while goalkeeper Pat Bourque was in blistering form.
