Ten-try York Acorn eye title glory

YORK Acorn ARLC remain on course for the National Conference League division one title after a ten-try 54-0 demolition of basement club Castleford Panthers.

The visitors were dominant in a one-sided tussle to earn another invaluable two points that puts them two points adrift of leaders Castleford Lock Lane.

Lock Lane have completed their fixtures, while the Blue and Golds have two games remaining. Bradford Dudley Hill, Egremont Rangers and Hunslet Warriors could all yet overhaul Acorn in the race for promotion.

Wingman Adam Sellers maintained his rich vein of try-scoring form with a hat trick in another impressive performance against Panthers.

Acorn hit the front on 15 minutes when they managed to keep the ball alive on the last tackle and Tom Hill was on hand to go over.

Five minutes later, Sellers scored in the corner after some excellent Acorn approach work.

The Blue and Golds continued to press and substitute Nic Caldwell was unstoppable near the line as he crashed over on 27 minutes.

Winger Aaron Thompson crossed on 31 minutes directly from a scrum after some more good passing and Antony Chilton kicked his first conversion.

Three minutes later, after a good break down the right-hand side, Matthew Woods scored and Chilton’s conversion made it 24-0 at the break.

In the second period, Joe Porter burst up the middle on 46 minutes for a good try, before Sellers grabbed his second after he regathered a good Tim Elliott kick on 50 minutes, and he went over for the hat-trick after a superb Joe Burns break on the hour.

Two more tries were scored in the half, by full-back Joel Johnson on 66 minutes and Woods, who grabbed his second on 70 minutes. The reliable Chilton converted all five second-half tries.

Adam Endersby was man of the match after another all-action display, well supported in a good all-round team performance in which Michael Embleton, Elliott and Alan Willetts shone.

Acorn travel to Millom next week with victory a must in their biggest game for three years as they bid to regain premier division status.
