30p for hour of football is low-cost plan

LOW-COST football is being offered to youngsters in York.

City of York Council have teamed up with York St John University and Sport England to provide hour-long sessions for only 30p, starting on Thursday.

Aimed at boys and girls aged from 14 to 25, the sessions will be held at York St John’s all-weather pitch in Heworth from 6pm to 7pm each week.

The council has been able to subsidise the programme using Sport England’s Sportivate fund. The funding can also give participants who attend a certain number of sessions a discount on the cost of sports training, such as tuition to gain a coaching qualification.

Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “Getting more young people more active together with our partners is a key part of our commitment to health and wellbeing and also forms part of our legacy from this, the year of York Gold 2012.”
