Former Knights captain Lee Paterson set to start with Scotland in cup campaign

FORMER York City Knights captain Lee Paterson is set to start at loose-forward as Scotland kick off their Alitalia Cup campaign tomorrow – but there is no place in the 20-man squad for Jack Stearman.

Paterson, now registered to Aussie club Mackay Cutters, is a late replacement for former Widnes team-mate John Duffy, whose back injury has forced him into retirement.

Stearman, like Paterson a product of New Earswick All Blacks, and now back at his old amateur club, had kept his place in the Saltire’s provisional 30-man party despite only one first-team appearance for York this year, but is only an outside bet to play in the competition.

Scotland take on Ireland in Edinburgh tomorrow as both sides build towards next year’s World Cup.

Ireland include former Knights Luke Ambler and Sean Hesketh. England Knights also play in the tournament.
