Planet Bowls tournament to be hosted in York

YORK Indoor Bowls Club have scooped the rights to host a major bowls tournament at Easter.

The Thanet Road club’s deal with Planet Bowls organisers will see the country’s top bowlers playing singles over two days, starting on Good Friday and concluding the following day.

Planet Bowls is a singles competition played in sets and events will be run throughout England, with York being selected as the only venue in the North.

The competition winners will go forward to the finals day, which will be held at Erewash Indoor Bowls Club in Nottingham in October 2013.

Meanwhile, York IBC had an impressive turnout at the open days run by the City of York Council’s Eng-AGE 50+ Games initiative run over three days last week.

Officials are hoping that more people will become interested and join the club over the coming months.

The club offers free coaching and free hire of equipment for all beginners.

Anyone interested can book a time by phoning 01904 704180.

York’s representative season starts tomorrow with the national Over-60s Double Rinks competition.

The ‘A’ team take on Hornsea at 12.30pm and the ‘B’ team will go head-to-head with Ryedale at noon.

On Saturday, York take on Scunthorpe in the EIBA Top Club Competition.

Current England Under-25s player and trialist for the full national team Zoe Eagles will represent York in the ladies singles discipline, with England U25s trialist Adam Liddell playing in the men’s singles.

Phil Emmerson skips the pairs, Paul Humphreys the triples and David Attwood the fours.

The game starts at noon.
