Motorsport: Ashley Slights on track with new 1.4 Yaris

EAST Yorkshire racer Ashley Slights hailed the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire an “ideal test event” for his new Slights Rally Sport Toyota Yaris 1.4S.

The 19-year-old Sutton-on-Derwent-based driver has spent 18 months working on his new Yaris before going into the Trackrod fray alongside new co-driver Matthew Whattam, of York.

Slights and Whattam finished first in class and fourth overall in the BRC Challenge section at the rally.

Slights said: “Rally Yorkshire was the ideal test for the car’s first event, and we have learned a lot from it.”

The rally opened with a 15-mile Dalby Forest night stage, with a further three stages the following day totalling 45 stage miles.

Slights added: “As our first competitive stage in the new car, 15 miles through Dalby in the dark seemed quite daunting. It was slippier than I anticipated, but I was happy with the car considering the conditions.”

Slights then turned in a strong performance on the following day’s trio of stages.

Slights’ 2011 Yaris is for sale and anyone interested should phone 01904 611494.
