Antony Chilton bags big York Acorn win

A LAST-GASP penalty by Antony Chilton kept York Acorn ARLC’s promotion hopes alive by sealing a 26-24 win over Milford Marlins in National Conference League division one.

In winning a pulsating match, the Blue and Golds are now in third place but only two points off the summit with games in hand on their rivals.

Acorn took the lead on 21 minutes when Adam Endersby bounced off two would-be tacklers to crash over.

However, three minutes later, Acorn failed to deal with a high kick and Milford hooker James Coates was on hand to ground the ball.

On the half-hour, a Josh Parle cross-field kick saw centre Matty Harding regather and score, but Acorn got back into it on 36 minutes when Adam Sellers got over in the corner after some excellent passing.

On the stroke of half-time, Acorn were penalised in the tackle and full-back Ryan Oxtoby kicked an easy penalty.

Acorn started the second period well and they struck on 46 minutes when Joe Budd supported well to cross after some superb interplay. Chilton goaled.

A Chilton penalty increased the lead on 51 minutes, but Milford hit back on 55 minutes when Parle scored a smart try and Oxtoby goaled.

The pressure on Acorn increased further when Oxtoby slotted another penalty on 60 minutes.

On 71 minutes, Joe Porter took the ball on a blockbusting run that left the Milford defence in tatters to score a superb try, which Chilton goaled before adding another penalty on 73 minutes.

On 76 minutes, a Milford bomb was knocked on and Ryan Pinder picked up to score and Oxtoby’s goal levelled before Chilton’s dramatic 79th minute kick.

Adam Endersby was Acorn’s man of the match, with support from Aaron Thompson, Budd and Sellers.
