Billiards: Bootham's ‘A’ team holds sway in club rivalry clash

THE opening match in the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Billiards League saw Bootham ‘A’ defeat their ‘B’ team 4-2.

Nick Parker and Colin Robinson gave the ‘A’ team an ideal start by building a 75-point aggregate lead.

Ray Stamp’s two-point win and Tim Fillingham’s 32-point success levelled, but the ‘A’ team still held a 41-point aggregate advantage.

Chris Dower sealed the match for the ‘A’ team.

In their second match, Bootham ‘B’ recovered to overturn defending champions Heworth 4-2.

Heworth struggled on unprepared tables and Gary Rogers, least season’s Player of the Year and Highest Break winner, failed to clear his -165 handicap by 40 points, which gave his opponent a 190-point win.

Keith Watkinson levelled but Stamp and Alf Appleby sealed the victory before Steve Burdett gained Heworth’s second point.

Heworth then hosted Bootham ‘A’ and ran out 5-1 winners.

Bootham’s Jeff Brown had a 92-point win over Jason Milner but Rogers (59, 47, 36 breaks) levelled and Burdett, Brian Birch and Keith Watkinson also won.

Acomb came away from Fulford with a 5-1 victory.

Gary Robinson and John Ashwell gave Acomb a head start, but Terry Ward pulled one back.

Trevor Ventress and Paul Holmes completed Acomb’s success.
