Simon Dyson Dun for as Carnoustie kicks back

SIMON DYSON has work to do if he is to have a chance of reclaiming his Alfred Dunhill Links Championship crown.

The York-born European Tour golfer, who won the event in 2009, carded a one-over-par 73 at Carnoustie in the opening salvo of the $5,000,000 event, which sees rounds also played at Kingsbarns and St Andrews.

Dyson endured a topsy-turvy day and was left well down the field at its finish. Opening with two bogeys, birdies at the third and fourth levelled up his scorecard. But they were followed by dropped shots at the seventh and ninth.

Malton & Norton star Dyson picked up shots again at the 12th and 13th but a final bogey at the par-four 15th consigned him to a disappointing day. South African Brendan Grace leads the field after a 12-under-par 60 at Kingsbarns.
