Golden glory for City of York athletes

CITY of York Athletics Club enjoyed a high five at the Yorkshire Veterans Championships.

A five-strong team of City of York athletes – Maria Williams, Sue Richardson, Fiona Crompton, Neil Hunter and Andrew England – returned home with a clutch of medals.

Williams, competing in the W65 category, recorded six personal bests and six championship bests as she took gold in the 100 metres in 17.47 seconds, the high jump with 1.08m, the 200m in 37.1 seconds, the javelin in 13.72m, the long jump in 3.25m and discus with a throw of 14.98m.

Richardson, a W50 athlete, took four golds, winning the 100m in 16.42 seconds, the long jump with 4.00m, the high jump with 1.30m and the triple jump with a leap of 8.80m.

Crompton had a tough time in the W55 section against new athletes moving into her age group, but she collected silver in the shot with a throw of 8.04m, silver in the discus with 17.64m, silver in the javelin with 18.27m and bronze in the hammer with 22.41m.

Club chairman Hunter, competing in the M50 category, won gold in the high jump with 1.30m and javelin with a personal best of 28.34m and silver in the discus with a PB of 24.31m.

England (M40) won javelin gold with 35.56m and took the triple jump with 11.17m.
