AS rivers in North Yorkshire burst their banks, The Press sports desk were also flooded by responses to our recently-published 1960s’ football team photograph, writes Dave Flett.
The side in question were the Yorkshire Herald and they were pictured with the Sunday League Trophy, which they are believed to have won in 1963.
Thanks to the memory of Roy Pattison, sat front row first from the left, we can also reveal that Alec Benton scored the final’s winning goal during extra time after the newspaper side had levelled the scores in the final minute of normal time.
The final was played at the then Shepherd’s Ground in Holly Bank and, like the Herald who included Billy Hughes in their ranks, opponents Severus WMC fielded a former York City player in their team – Peter Wragg.
From (left to right) the players that have been identified are back row: Ron Wilson, Bob Readman, Bob Proctor, Roy Ellwood, Brian Foster, John Fewster and manager Jim “Lenny” Theaker. Front row: Roy Pattison, Billy Hughes, Brian Pudsey, Alec Benton and Jimmy Keller.
Thanks to Roy Pattison, Roy Morton and Graham Bradbury, among others, for their recollections.
