James Wake up to Heworth task

James Wake has joined Heworth Golf Club as their new head professional, coming in from Fulford GC where he started his career.

From the age of nine, Ward, from York, played amateur golf at Fulford as a junior, during which time he worked under the guidance of Martin Brown in the professional shop.

He turned professional at Fulford in 2009, where he then undertook his Professional Golfers’ Association degree as assistant professional under Guy Wills, before becoming fully qualified this year.

In his new role, Wake “will aim to provide five-star services to the club members and the club visitors,” as well as “expert advice on any aspect of the game, from the golf swing to buying the perfect new driver”.

With more than seven years of experience in the game he has demonstrated a “great passion” for teaching, for which he has been rewarded at Heworth with a City of York Council contract for teaching both juniors and adults.

Ward plans to diversify the golf tuition, from custom club fitting to the use of the latest video technology, and offer “a wide variety” of teaching techniques.

“Through this I would like to bring a full range of golfers to Heworth to offer lessons to those from high handicappers to scratch golfers,” he said.

Ward was keen to thank pro shop sponsors Turnbulls Mazda York, PMJ Masonry and Jon Carr IT for the “support and the help” they have given.

Ward will also be organising corporate golf days and running the newly refurbished professional shop, which will also offer the sale and repair of electric trolleys.

 

FULFORD GC’s Eddie McCardle, who plays off 20, bagged his first hole in one, in 25 years of playing, at the par-three tenth hole using a five iron.

An ace was also struck by Forest Park GC member Mark England on the 170-yard fourth hole.
