Marshall hopes Tadcaster Albion are inspired for Maltby Main match

Tadcaster Albion manager Paul Marshall says his side will travel to Maltby Main tomorrow “on cloud nine” after knocking Evo-Stik League premier division side Skelmersdale United out of the FA Cup, writes Alex Finnis.

Last weekend’s win booked Albion a third qualifying round tie against former Football League side Boston United, and increased their unbeaten run to five games.

Said Marshall of the win over Skelmersdale: “It was a tremendous all-round effort, from the ’keeper, who made a great save at 2-1 to help keep us in it, to Callum Ward, who was the definite man-of-the-match – he got a hat-trick as well as the assist for the penalty which Steven Jeff slammed in.”

Eighteen-year-old Ward barely got a game last season, but Marshall raved about the performance of the striker who is now his side’s top scorer this season with seven goals. He has also urged people to vote for the youngster as the player of the round on the FA’s website.

“I hope people go and vote, because he really deserves it,” said the Albion boss.

He is now hoping his players can use the excitement of the upcoming game against Boston to inspire a victory over Maltby.

“Everyone will be trying to impress to get a place next week and I’m sure we can go there and get the three points,” said Marshall – who said in The Press yesterday that the club were hopeful of getting next Saturday’s cup tie on despite the Tadcaster floods leaving the ground under six feet of water.

“We’re doing well at the moment, we’re unbeaten in the last five and everybody is on cloud nine after the cup result.

“It is a tough place to go though, and with all the rain it won’t be a pretty sight.”

Maltby are struggling in the Northern Counties East League premier division, sitting fourth from bottom with seven points, while Albion are ninth and have games in hand over all of their rivals.

Pickering Town head into tomorrow’s clash with Thackley in good form, having won their last two games, but manager Jimmy Reid will be “happy to come away with a draw”.

“They’re a very good, organised team, they’ve got some good players,” said Reid. “But we’re hoping for a decent result.”

Thackley are in hot goal-scoring form – they thrashed Heanor Town 5-0 last Saturday before crushing Lincoln Moorlands Railway 6-0 on Wednesday night.

“We’ve got some tough games coming up,” said the Pickering boss. “After this weekend we’ve got Staveley Miners on Wednesday and Scarborough next Saturday. We’re getting wins over the teams around us in the league but we need to get points in the bigger games against the teams above us.”

The absence of Tom Fenwick, away on his stag do, will be a blow to Reid and his side. The Pickering striker scored a hat-trick in last weekend’s 4-1 thrashing of Hall Road Rangers, and already has seven goals so far this season.

“I’m not sure what’s worse, missing the game or getting married,” joked Reid, who is also without another striker, Steve Baxter, because of a thigh injury, and full-back Dean Readman, who is banned.

High-flying Scarborough Athletic, who are unbeaten in their last seven and enjoyed a 2-1 win over Staveley Miners on Wednesday night, host 13th-placed Heanor.

In division one, Selby Town host bottom club Appleby Frodingham.

Struggling Selby picked up their first win since the opening day of the season against Bottesford Town on Wednesday and will be hopeful they can make it two on the bounce this weekend.

In Blue Square Bet North, Harrogate Town travel to Worcester City. Neighbours Harrogate Railway host Trafford in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy. Trafford sit 12 places above Rail in the Evo-Stik League division one north.
