Phoenix, Tykes, Carnegie... what next for Yorkshire’s one-day side?

Yorkshire are looking for a new name in one-day cricket – and they want their members and supporters to help them to choose it.

The White Rose county have put a message on their website saying that the team’s name for Clydesdale Bank 40 and Friends Life t20 competitions would no longer be Yorkshire Carnegie from 2013 onwards.

Their agreement with Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie University for the team name and the naming rights for Headingley has been in operation since 2006.

The naming rights for the ground are also up for tender, with commercial director Andy Dawson confirming: “We are actively in the market.”

But it is the renaming of the limited-overs teams for the fourth time – after previous incarnations as Phoenix and Tykes – that will get tongues wagging.

The club plan to gather public responses and then put the most popular to a vote, although it cannot be linked to a commercial venture like the ground can be.

Yorkshire Carnegie was acceptable on ECB rules because the university is not a commercial organisation, according to Dawson.

“We just thought that it would be quite good to engage the public to find out what they like, develop a shortlist from that and adopt what they want,” he said.

“That can only benefit us if it’s something the community desires.

“Everyone has their own idea of things. We’ve had quite a few mentioned already, whether it be the Yorkshire Thunder, Yorkshire Hawks or even the Yorkshire Whippets.”

Supporters took to Twitter yesterday to suggest a few options, including Yorkshire Miners and the Yorkshire FlatCaps. Lancashire fans were even suggesting the Yorkshire Puddings.
