Rapid double on the Pontefract card for Tony Coyle racehorse New Hampshire

North Yorkshire trainer Tony Coyle, who placed New Hampshire to win in clear-cut style at Catterick on Saturday, is set to bring out his mud-loving gelding again tomorrow at Pontefract in a bid to complete a quick double.

The £16,500 Simon Scrope Dalby Screw-Driver Handicap is the target for the gelding, bought by Coyle for 20,000 guineas at Newmarket Sales in February and a horse who has already more than paid his way.

Twice successful, as well as proving a consistent placed performer, New Hampshire gained his latest success in no-nonsense style. He made all the running at Catterick and galloped his rivals into the ground, eventually passing the post with four and a half lengths to spare.

Coyle had intimated that the November Handicap at Doncaster would be New Hampshire’s next target, but the Norton handler has plainly identified a tempting opportunity here and is keen to take it. A 6lb penalty will be reduced by Lee Topliss’s 3lb claim and New Hampshire has a great chance to completing a notable encore.

Loch Moy has twice run well this season and is taken to make it third time lucky in the opening Irish Stallion Farms Strawberry Hill Maiden Stakes.

Trained by Richard Fahey for Jim McGrath’s Inner Circle group, Loch Moy finished third at Haydock on his debut and occupied the same position on his only other start at Newcastle. He is open to further improvement.

Bronze Beau, trained by Linda Stubbs, is fancied to defy top weight in the Comedy Curry Night on Friday 5th October Handicap over five furlongs.

The five-year-old is overdue another win and came close at Beverley on his latest start when finishing second. He will be partnered by James Sullivan,who knows him well.

The opening day of Newmarket’s excellent meeting is highlighted by the £40,000 Somerville Tattersall Stakes, a Group 3 event for juveniles.

Richard Fahey’s Unsinkable, unbeaten in two starts, takes a steep rise in class, but is a promising colt, but preference is for Irish raider Canary Row, who shaped well to finish fourth on his latest outing, after a summer break. He looks capable of holding his own in this company.

Paul Hanagan, who has a fighting chance aboard Ebn Arab in the feature race, also has other good chances on the seven-race card.

The former Malton pilot rides Red Avenger in the Cambridge News Nursery and the Ed Dunlop-trained youngster has solid claims.

A winner at Warwick on his second start, he went down by a head at Doncaster’s St Leger Festival to Regal Dan. He looks progressive.

Hanagan can also expect a good run from the promising Elkaayed in the opening British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing Maiden Stakes, but preference is for the even more promising Telescope, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and the mount of Richard Hughes.

Telescope made his debut at Ascot earlier this month and failed by only a short head to beat Snow King. He looks a decent prospect and will be a popular choice to go one better in this one-mile contest.

Stoute and Hughes can also lift the Princess Royal Richard Hambro Stakes, a Listed event, with nap selection Sequence.

Successful at Thirsk and Newmarket, Sequence ran a fine race in defeat at York’s Ebor Festival when chasing home Pale Mimosa in the Galtres Stakes. Owned by the Queen, Sequence can carry the famous Royal colours to another victory.

Hanagan can resume winning ways in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing Fillies’ Handicap on Hezmah. John Gosden’s four-year-old won at Yarmouth last time and is open to improvement.
