Tennis: York skipper’s bold display fails to quell the drop

York Tennis Club did not make way without a fight as they slipped from the top tier of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

They lost 8-4 to hosts Pocklington, but not before captain Pete Goodall steered partner Jason Whiting to a masterly three points from 24 games won, which included torpedoing the home axis of Ed Barker-Wyatt and Ben Dyer 7-5.

But with York 2 narrowly missing promotion from division two, it means that next season will be the first time since 1995, that York TC has not figured in the Tyke Petroleum first division.

In the big division two relegation shoot-out between Stamford Bridge and Boston Spa, losers would be weepers.

So it proved for hosts Bridge as Spa’s David Aspland returned 3-28 alongside Simon Hughes, while Will Ziegler and Paul Kaye, scrapped hard for 2½-21.

The 9½-2½ win took Boston Spa to a healthy fourth spot, while Bridge become the first casualties in division two.

Starbeck 3 snatched third place in division seven, with a comprehensive 9-3 home win over Wigginton 4. Andy Guise and Simon Corbett starred for Starbeck with 3 points and 25 games.
