Hockey: Acomb ladies hit by Halifax blast

NO first-day joy for Acomb Ladies, whose Yorkshire League premier division season started with a 3-1 defeat at Halifax 2.

Missing three key players, it was a youthful-looking side who took the game to the hosts, Hannah Yoward and Emily Watson using their pace well.

However, Halifax turned up the heat with three unanswered goals.

The Tangerines pulled a goal back through a fine run by Laura Ward and should have further closed the gap but for Annie Pye’s close-range miss.

Halifax then held sway but there was no addition to the scoreline.
