York Cricket club go to Spain for charity t20 tournament
11:38am Friday 21st September 2012 in Sport
York Cricket Club have been rewarded for their Kingfisher Beer Cup final victory with a trip to Spain’s prestigious La Manga Club next month, to take part in the fifth Kiss Mix Lady Taverners Charity Cricket t20 Tournament.
The Yorkshire Premier League champions will head out to the five-star resort in Murcia, Spain, after beating Wanstead & Snaresbrook CC by eight wickets in the final at Derbyshire County Cricket Club last weekend to become the ECB National Club Champions.
York, who won the Premier League for the sixth time in a row this summer, are one of ten teams in the knockout competition, which includes ECB National Club t20 champions Wimbledon, as well as teams from Spain, Belgium, Switzerland and four sides from Norway.
And should they take victory at the event, which takes place from October 12 to 16, they will then have the privilege of facing a Lord’s Taverners’ Legends side captained by England Ashes-winning captain Mike Gatting in a charity match on the final day.
“Everyone is massively excited to get out there,” said club captain Dan Woods.
“We can’t wait, after all the hard work and preparation to win the National Championship I can’t think of a better reward.
“I don’t know anything about the sides we’re playing apart from Wimbledon,” added Woods. “They’re the National Club t20 Champions and look very strong, but apart from that I’ve got no idea really.”
Running alongside the inaugural Kiss Mix Lord’s Taverners Golf Classic, the t20 tournament is part of a four-day golf and cricket charity extravaganza taking place at La Manga Club next month.
Gatting will headline a star-studded line-up that will participate in the golf competition. Joining him will be former England teammates Phillip DeFreitas and Neil Radford.
The golf and cricket competitions are just some of the many events being staged in 2012 by the fundraising organisation – the official charity for recreational cricket and the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity.
