York City boss Mills in rallying call

City players salute scorer Paddy McLaughlin, far right City players salute scorer Paddy McLaughlin, far right

YORK City manager Gary Mills is confident his players will bounce back from last night’s 3-1 defeat at Burton Albion.

The Minstermen went down to goals from Lee Bell, Calvin Zola and Matt Paterson at the Pirelli Stadium despite taking a tenth-minute lead through Paddy McLaughlin.

But the loss represented only City’s second reverse of the npower League Two campaign and Mills was in no mood for critcism at the final whistle.

He said: “We have lost a game but my players have been magnificent this season so we just have to take it on the chin and bounce back on Saturday at home to Cheltenham. I know this squad of players will go out and do that.

“We have had two draws and that’s fine when you back it up with a win but we have lost and now we will have to make sure we don’t make it four without a win."

Mills confirmed Clarke Carlisle will miss the Cheltenham game after being carried off from the first-half action last night with an ankle problem.

But on-loan Leeds left-back Charlie Taylor will be hoping for a recall after being left out of last night’s squad.

A game to forget! Draw a line under it and carry on! I think Carlisle's injury lost us that bit of momentum we seemed to be gaining after going a head'

Walker worked hard and was un-fairly critised by a large section' Couls had a quiet game along with J Smith. We lost it in the middle of the park and were chasing shadows second half!

We'll 'bounce back' on Sat!

Come on York!

Let's get some creativity into the midfield. McReady on in the centre and pushing up to feed 3 of Walker/Coulson/Blair
/Johnson. Would prefer to see 2 of those up front and 4 in the middle bu tthat won't happen!

We will lose as many games as we win. Mills is right - draw a line under this game and move onto the next. We are capable of beating any team in this league on our day. Great chance to bounce back on saturday, looking forward to a big crowd hopefully at BC with another rocking atmosphere

Sounds like we got sucked into playing Burton's game rather than ours, which by all accounts was working in the first half. As said above, one to forget, but still one or two positives (we have yet to be denied a goal this season in any competition!), and maybe this game highlights some of the areas we need to work on. The league position at the moment means very little, half of the league are within 3 points of each other!

woefully inept at times last night. I agree with the first poster, definitely chasing shadows in the second half. A bad time to go on a winless run and I'm not convinced that we will bounce back on Saturday. I think we have been brought back down to earth from all those who had felt we would do very well in this league. We are certainly no better than an average mid/lower table league 2 team and some people really need to re-assess their expectations. This was the 2nd game I have been to away this season and we looked a shadow of the team that played Doncaster.

I'm pretty sure you were saying the same thing about us last year too. Have a little faith, it was one bad performance, against a team that battered Oxford a week ago!

Poor second half - lost it in middle field - we need Kerr back as soon as possible. Don't agree with the comments on Walker - last night was a better performances - worked hard up front, looking sharper. For one Coulson had a quite game. Jonathan Smith - very disappointing, why not give McReady ago - looks ready to me. Once we lost Clarke Carlisle we became less solid at the back - Zola became stronger, given more space to operate. One point on the second half - Lanre gave the winger far too much space - allowing crosses into the box - one brilliant save from Inggy, one saved but pushed out to Zola. We sat back and let them come onto us - looked leggy - reaction to Exter trip - 11hrs going down - not sure how long to get back. Finally - someone sat near me last night said the referee was a 'homer' - looked to favour the home side. I know Ash got booked for kicking the ball into the hoarding - he beat the guy for pace only to see him go down - big grin on his face when he got the free kick. They play the referee - wasted time, delaying restarts. How did Zola get a free kick when he threw himself into Chris Smith, only for Chris to get a talking to and a free kick against him. Sorry - a poor performance from the referee on the night.

Poor defending cost us badly last night, all three goals were avoidable.
We had lots of possession but struggled to find the final pass.
Two great point blank saves from Ingham helped keep the score down.
Doig is solid enough when defending but his distribution from the back is poor at times. On several occassions last night he put us under pressure trying to over play when an old fashioned long ball down field was needed.
Not usually one to criticise the officials but there were some strange decisions last night. If we get that ref again I hope he shows better empathy with the players and allows them to get on with the game. Far too often he got involved and stopped the game when it was not necessary.

We'll score most games and we'll concede most games, we'll finish mid-table. I'd be happy with that. End of.

Only 2 points from the last 3 games. It has been hard work but we're not going to get playoffs with form like that.

blimey prob any team will have runs of three games like weve had the last three,ok you good argue the home draw against chesterfield were points dropped but most people were happy to gain a point as it turned out and the two games away at exeter and burton are hardly easy ones to be looking at picking maximum points, whos to say we wont pick up 3 wins in 3 in different run its a bit early to be too despondant about 3 such games.

Disappointing 2nd half and it will take time for us to settle into the division but I'm not overly worried. As with last season, when we're good we're great but there will be off days. Looking forward to Saturday and taking 3 points off Cheltenham.

We were suspect to route 1 tactics last year and it sounded last night from the commentary that this problem has not been addressed. But lets get real. How many of the 'depressives' would have settled for a mid point in the league after 7 matches! And some tough opponents as well. So get behind City on Saturday and lift them to a victory. Keep that 'buzz' going!!

I seem to recall that Hannibal Lecter wanted a view and was denied it becuase his previous actions suggested that it was not warranted. On the real point it was disappointing and these things happen. Overall we have had a good start to a step up in league and have shown positive signs. On the other hand we do need to get to grips at all levels with the heavy lumpers. Not a professional coach so won't advise GM but it is an evident weakness. Come on City!

From what I've seen so far this season, we seem extremely good in the final third, sort of solid but uninspired in the middle, fairly good at centre-back and fairly poor at the wing-back/ full-back positions. That seems strange given that we were all so concerned about signing a striker earlier in the season, but as with last season, are goals are coming from all over the place.

My own (amateur) interpretation of our leaky defense problem is that we have full-backs who are very good going forward, but not particularly good at defending. Obviously, players like 'Banjo are great at tackling/interceptin
g (just been re-watching the Luton play off match, and he's great!), but both he and Fyfield/Taylor tend to be out of position at crucial moments. They seem to commit too fully to attacks when we're going forward, and fall back too far and towards our penalty area when defending, which leaves opposition players to put crosses in whenever they please. I'm not one to 'slag-off' our players under any circumstances, and I think that our full-backs are good footballers, but they need to concentrate more on their positioning. Any other theories about why we're conceding so many goals?

Dissapointing result last night especially being undone by long ball merchants-thought we were better then that-we spent enough time combatting that in the BSP-but never mind we'll learn from that hopefully & move on- just have to win Saturday to make up for it-its still a learning curve for most of the players there will be bad results like that-lets hope for some good ones in the next few games-Come on the City!

Honestly in my view as I think I stated a few weeks ago the season was going to hinge on the defence. We started the season with a back line actually weaker than the season before given we lost Meredith. Mills was very loyal to the defence as a whole and as such was taking a big risk given its a higher level, left back continues to be a problem area. As much as many seem to have issues with one defender Or another whether that be Parslow, Smith, Fyfield the fact is as a whole they are conceading too many goals, losing Kerr has also been a factor in my opinion.
One thing is for sure, we have to start getting some clean sheets.

There's no one big thing wrong with the defence just lots of things that add up. We looked shaky whenever they came forward, even before Carlisle went off but no one had a total shocker. Most of their attacks came down their left so you can't blame our left back issues. First goal we had a number of chances to clear but couldn't get it away from the box, second we were out numbered on the right (Banjo was AWOL) and so they got a decent shot away that was parried to Zola and the third was a hopeful lob into the box that we couldn't deal with (outmuscled)- which happens too often. It was at the far end but Ingham could perhaps have come for it - he didn't come for any crosses/corners like he was at the end of last season. Each goal sums up an issue we have plus we gift the ball away in defence too often offering opponents chances they've not had to work for. Second half we hardly had the ball as they picked up all the second balls and we gave the ball away too easily when we did have it. Their fullbacks did well and so quashed most of our better options Coulson & Chambers. We also missed the couple of decent chances we did get. Ref & lino at our end were poor but nothing that really affected the result. The main difference was Zola, as they could hoof it clear and it wouldn't come straight back and anything thrown up to him near our box caused us problems.

Is that you Millsy.
If so what a load of ****.
Banjo is out of his depth at this level.
Taylor was sadly missed at left back and if Blanchett isnt to be involved then off load or put out on loan
Cant believe that we have watched Ben Gibson sign on at Tranmere for another 3 months. Yes its a league 1 club BLAH BLAH BLAH but he had 2 wembley wins with us.
Stop subbing J Smith every game this season, take Dan Parslow off and put Paddy in the holding roll late on in games. Dan takes 5 seconds to make a decision Paddy its automatic .
