City players salute scorer Paddy McLaughlin, far right
YORK City manager Gary Mills is confident his players will bounce back from last night’s 3-1 defeat at Burton Albion.
The Minstermen went down to goals from Lee Bell, Calvin Zola and Matt Paterson at the Pirelli Stadium despite taking a tenth-minute lead through Paddy McLaughlin.
But the loss represented only City’s second reverse of the npower League Two campaign and Mills was in no mood for critcism at the final whistle.
He said: “We have lost a game but my players have been magnificent this season so we just have to take it on the chin and bounce back on Saturday at home to Cheltenham. I know this squad of players will go out and do that.
“We have had two draws and that’s fine when you back it up with a win but we have lost and now we will have to make sure we don’t make it four without a win."
Mills confirmed Clarke Carlisle will miss the Cheltenham game after being carried off from the first-half action last night with an ankle problem.
But on-loan Leeds left-back Charlie Taylor will be hoping for a recall after being left out of last night’s squad.

woefully inept at times last night. I agree with the first poster, definitely chasing shadows in the second half. A bad time to go on a winless run and I'm not convinced that we will bounce back on Saturday. I think we have been brought back down to earth from all those who had felt we would do very well in this league. We are certainly no better than an average mid/lower table league 2 team and some people really need to re-assess their expectations. This was the 2nd game I have been to away this season and we looked a shadow of the team that played Doncaster.

We had lots of possession but struggled to find the final pass.
Two great point blank saves from Ingham helped keep the score down.
Doig is solid enough when defending but his distribution from the back is poor at times. On several occassions last night he put us under pressure trying to over play when an old fashioned long ball down field was needed.
Not usually one to criticise the officials but there were some strange decisions last night. If we get that ref again I hope he shows better empathy with the players and allows them to get on with the game. Far too often he got involved and stopped the game when it was not necessary.

On the real point it was disappointing and these things happen. Overall we have had a good start to a step up in league and have shown positive signs. On the other hand we do need to get to grips at all levels with the heavy lumpers. Not a professional coach so won't advise GM but it is an evident weakness. Come on City!

My own (amateur) interpretation of our leaky defense problem is that we have full-backs who are very good going forward, but not particularly good at defending. Obviously, players like 'Banjo are great at tackling/interceptin
g (just been re-watching the Luton play off match, and he's great!), but both he and Fyfield/Taylor tend to be out of position at crucial moments. They seem to commit too fully to attacks when we're going forward, and fall back too far and towards our penalty area when defending, which leaves opposition players to put crosses in whenever they please. I'm not one to 'slag-off' our players under any circumstances, and I think that our full-backs are good footballers, but they need to concentrate more on their positioning. Any other theories about why we're conceding so many goals?

We started the season with a back line actually weaker than the season before given we lost Meredith. Mills was very loyal to the defence as a whole and as such was taking a big risk given its a higher level, left back continues to be a problem area. As much as many seem to have issues with one defender Or another whether that be Parslow, Smith, Fyfield the fact is as a whole they are conceading too many goals, losing Kerr has also been a factor in my opinion.
From what I've seen so far this season, we seem extremely good in the final third, sort of solid but uninspired in the middle, fairly good at centre-back and fairly poor at the wing-back/ full-back positions. That seems strange given that we were all so concerned about signing a striker earlier in the season, but as with last season, are goals are coming from all over the place.

One thing is for sure, we have to start getting some clean sheets.

There's no one big thing wrong with the defence just lots of things that add up. We looked shaky whenever they came forward, even before Carlisle went off but no one had a total shocker. Most of their attacks came down their left so you can't blame our left back issues. First goal we had a number of chances to clear but couldn't get it away from the box, second we were out numbered on the right (Banjo was AWOL) and so they got a decent shot away that was parried to Zola and the third was a hopeful lob into the box that we couldn't deal with (outmuscled)- which happens too often. It was at the far end but Ingham could perhaps have come for it - he didn't come for any crosses/corners like he was at the end of last season. Each goal sums up an issue we have plus we gift the ball away in defence too often offering opponents chances they've not had to work for. Second half we hardly had the ball as they picked up all the second balls and we gave the ball away too easily when we did have it. Their fullbacks did well and so quashed most of our better options Coulson & Chambers. We also missed the couple of decent chances we did get. Ref & lino at our end were poor but nothing that really affected the result. The main difference was Zola, as they could hoof it clear and it wouldn't come straight back and anything thrown up to him near our box caused us problems.
If so what a load of ****.
Banjo is out of his depth at this level.
Taylor was sadly missed at left back and if Blanchett isnt to be involved then off load or put out on loan
Cant believe that we have watched Ben Gibson sign on at Tranmere for another 3 months. Yes its a league 1 club BLAH BLAH BLAH but he had 2 wembley wins with us.
Stop subbing J Smith every game this season, take Dan Parslow off and put Paddy in the holding roll late on in games. Dan takes 5 seconds to make a decision Paddy its automatic .

Walker worked hard and was un-fairly critised by a large section' Couls had a quiet game along with J Smith. We lost it in the middle of the park and were chasing shadows second half!
We'll 'bounce back' on Sat!
Come on York!
