SUPER Sevens bowls tournament rookies Holgate Clubbers made their first time count.

They crowned their competition debut with a 53-42 triumph over Haxby Road Rockets, who extended their perennial bridesmaids’ tag.

Since the 2004 establishment of the tournament, comprising two pairs’ matches and a triples tie, the Rockets have appeared in no less than five finals only to perish in them all.

The five-time woe arrived at the hands of the Clubbers, whose success in a tight duel was effectively sealed in the pairs match in which Mick Crowe and Don Fentiman countered from 8-0 and 12-6 deficits to win 19-15.
