A FORMER York City Knights coach has been appointed as the new head coach of Whitehaven.

Ex-Castleford, Gateshead and York boss Dave Woods succeeds fellow Australian Don Gailer, who parted company with the newly-promoted Championship One club last month after just one season in charge at the Recreation Ground.

And it means that he will now come up against the Knights next term.

Woods guided Castleford to promotion to Super League in 2005 after beating Whitehaven in the National League Grand Final and also led Gateshead to promotion to the second-tier division in 2008.

He joined York in April 2010 as director of rugby, taking over as head coach two months later and steering the club to the Championship via the play-offs.
