Switchover fails to yield winning start for York Acorn footballers

York Acorn made their York Minster Engineering Football League debut after their switch from Sunday to Saturday action.

But despite hitting four goals in their Division Four encounter with LNER Builders, they conceded six to be on the wrong end of a ten-goal thriller.

Conner Larner (2) Wilson Briggs and Chris Ellerker shared the Acorn goals with Builders replying through Sam Hill (3), Steve Laidlaw, Jim Squires and Gary Hardcastle.

Tadcaster Town, formerly under the guise of Fox FC, had to weather a late comeback from hosts Melbourne before running out 3-2 winners.

Tony Wetherell, Tom Deighton and Will Leatt fired Tad ahead only for a Melbourne rally with late strikes from Kieran Hartnell and Gedas Labanauskis.

Wigginton began the new Reserve ‘A’ campaign with a 5-2 home win over Riccall which included a hat-trick for Josh Hutchinson. Nick Dunlop and Ben Thompson also scored with Jim Darlison bagging both Riccall goals.

Newly-promoted York RI went down 4-3 at Haxby with the home tally shared between J J Bell, Paul Holmes (2) and Andy Carter.

The two promoted sides to Reserve ‘B’ both collected points in their opening games.

A cross-cum-shot from Joe Karnski gave Fulford the perfect start at home to Aviva . Though Jimmy Wood levelled, Paul Gordon ensured Fulford collected all three points with a late winner.

Despite leading through two goals from Patrick Stockton, York St John lost 7-2 to Pocklington whose plunder was hit by Barry Gargett (3), John Heads, Nick Daniells and Mike Stacey (2).

Easingwold, looking to return to the top tier at the first time of asking, won 4-1 at home to White Horse. John Dey (2). Andrew Metcalfe senior and Simon Wilson notched for the hosts.

In the only two Reserve ‘C’ games, second-half goals from Bobby Templeton and Jamie Rank earned Stamford Bridge a 2-0 win over Hemingbrough, while Josh Knowles hit a hat-trick for newly promoted Selby RSSC in their 6-6 draw with Nestlé. Luke Lambert, Janos Takacs and Dave Sayles completed the Selby side’s tally.

Reserve ‘D’ welcomed three new sides but unfortunately none of the newcomers prevailed.

Despite a brace from Ian Dunning-Leak and a Tom Bateson goal, Rufforth lost 6-3 to Tadcaster Town, while Gareth Strain hit a treble and Sean Corr a double for Civil Service in defeating new boys Wheldrake 5-1. Tom Anderson hit the Wheldrake reply.

Levelling from a 2-0 deficit at home to F1 Racing, St Clement’s eventually lost 5-3. On target for the new Saints were Ricki Mizzi and Joe Hamilton (2). Racing’s marksmen were Adam McGuigan, Sean Taylor, Nigel Dawber and two Ben Caverely penalties.

At Cliffe, an Olly Everhard hat-trick and an Alan Boyd strike sealed Crayke’s emphatic 4-0 win.
