York Cricket Club opening up with strong trophy thrust

IN-FORM openers Duncan Snell and Liam McKendry will be key performers as York Cricket Club target their first ECB National Club Championship triumph in 37 years.

That is the view of Nick Kay, vice-captain and club secretary, ahead of a mouth-watering final clash with Wanstead & Snaresbrook at Derbyshire’s County Ground on Sunday (11am).

Snell smashed through the 1,000-run barrier for the campaign on the final weekend of the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League as York clinched their sixth successive championship with wins over title rivals Harrogate and Sheffield Collegiate.

His whirlwind 91 not out off 45 balls on Sunday steered the Clifton Parkers to their modest 133-run victory target against Collegiate, taking his final tally to 1,078 runs for the campaign at an average of 63.41.

Opening partner McKendry was 40 not out off 32 balls in support in the ten-wicket win.

Kay said: “Duncan got to 1,000 runs and Liam spent time at the crease and it was great that they both had big games against Sheffield Collegiate on Sunday.

“They are going to be massive for us in the final. It will be vital to get off to a good start.”
