Azeem Rafiq was the first to strike in the first over of the session to remove Owais Shah for four, before Steven Patterson and Ryan Sidebottom ousted James Foster and Adam Wheater respectively for 16.

Ryan ten Doeschate impressed to reach the interval unbeaten on 60, with Graham Napier on 13.
