Darts: Turner masterpiece seals Grand Final win

YORK’S Martyn Turner was crowned champion at the 2012 Jorvik Security Darts Open Grand Final.

The Rawcliffe arrows ace beat Doncaster’s Brandon Walsh 6-4 in the final of the York Darts Promotions event at Huntington Working Men’s Club.

Turner, in his first Grand Finals outing, recorded a three-dart average of 94.06 to overcome a spirited challenge from Walsh to take the £250 first prize.

Turner fired a 180 for a 13-dart leg, a 116 finish for 15 darts, an 18-darter and then a 102 finish for 15 darts to open up a 4-2 lead in the best of 11 leg final.

Walsh, who won his first two legs with a 180 for 18 and a 14-darter, stormed back with a 102 finish for 15 and a 100 finish for 18 to level the match.

However, Turner responded with a maximum in a 15-dart leg and closed out the match with a 17-darter.

In the semi-finals, Turner (18, 20, 17, 15, 18) had defeated Lutz Leutzsch (16, 20) 5-3, while Walsh (19, 18, 16, 21) defeated York’s Dave Scaum (17) 5-2.

The quarter-finals saw Leutzsch (156 finish) beat Chris Matthews 4-0 and Turner (13, 15, 18) oust Jake Patchett (15, 18, 120 finish for 15) 4-3, while Walsh (18, 19, 13, 20) was a 4-2 victor over Neil Hart (20, 15) and Scaum (19, 19) toppled Wayne Woodhouse 4-1.

Former PDC World Championship qualifier Chris Thompson exited at the last-16 stage, losing 3-0 to Leutzsch (17, 21).

In the same round Patchett (21, 17) trounced Phil Good 3-0, Turner (17, 18) beat Kirk Bevins 3-1, Hart (18, 18) got the better of Vernon Walsh (18) 3-2, Brandon Walsh (14) edged past Johnathan Crossland (180 for 16) 3-2, Woodhouse (16, 17, 18) beat Steve Silver 3-1 and Scaum knocked out Dave Lord 3-1.

In the last-32, Thompson (16, 17, 17) had whitewashed Martyn Usher 3-0, while Leutzsch (16, 15) beat Al Stevens (147 finish for 21) 3-1 and Patchett (16, 102 finish for 15, 20) took the scalp of John Quantock (180 for 14) 3-1.

Woodhouse (17, 15) was a 3-0 winner over Alex Render, while Lord (16) beat Pip Hair (106 finish) 3-1 and Scaum (19-100 finish for 21) dumped out Colin Hendry (21) 3-1.
