Tennis: Players dazzle at Beryl Bean Over-55s tournament

Net dividends as players dazzle ORGANISERS praised the high standard of play at qualifying for the finals of York’s ninth annual Beryl Bean Over-55s Tennis Tournament.

The top two couples from the two qualifying groups will battle it out for the trophy at the finals at Fulford Tennis Centre a week on Saturday.

Dunnington ’s Barbara Plummer and Liz Stacey were in great early form in group ‘A’, winning 10-1 in the first round.

Poppleton ’s Ros Latham and Rosie Cantrell, of Dunnington, had an 8-3 win in the second round, while Sheriff Hutton duo Pauline Hull and Lyn Minto had a close success over Dunnington pair Sue Lister and Caryl Raven.

Latham and Cantrell finished top of the group with 27 games and they will be joined in the final by Plummer and Stacey, who won 18.

In group ‘B’, Maz Broadbent and Ann Walker, of New Earswick , lost 8-3 to Dunnington’s Margaret Jenkins and Ann Murray, while Dinah Burke and Jenny Walker, of David Lloyd, lost 7-4 to Pam Campbell and Linda Irving, of Fulford.

Qualifiers Campbell and Irving and Burke and Walker won 21 games.
