Malton & Norton scrum-half Dan Cattle breaks away for a try against Pocklington
Malton & Norton RUFC held off a spirited Pocklington comeback to win 27-21 in a North One East derby tussle at The Gannock.
Newly-promoted Pocklington took the lead on ten minutes when centre Billy Hardy was sent clear to score under the posts.
Full-back Nick Bennett added the extras.
However, a succession of offences at the ruck and maul proved costly for Pock as Malton’s Ali Heard punished them with four flawless penalties for a 12-7 lead.
Both sides saw a player sent to the sin-bin and the visitors reduced the arrears with a Bennett penalty.
Malt raised the tempo in the run-up to half-time.
Wing Tom Newitt was forced into touch just short of the line and Pocklington knocked at from the lineout. From the scrum, Sam Triffitt fed scrum-half Dan Cattle and he scooted over between the posts.
Heard’s conversion made it 19-10 to the hosts at the interval.
After Heard missed from in front of the sticks, Malt produced some sparkling rugby that ended with Tom Newitt crossing for his side’s second try.
On 55 minutes, Pock wing Alex Lucas crossed to up the ante and Bennett kicked two penalties to make it 24-21. As Pock pressed for another score, Heard kicked a penalty to round off the scoring.
A last-gasp converted try consigned York to a 10-7 home defeat by Bridlington in a Yorkshire One they dominated.
Brid had earlier taken the lead on 12 minutes with a penalty in front of the posts after York had been caught offside.
York then camped in the Brid half but squandered a host of try-scoring opportunities, while also being denied by the referee.
On the stroke of half-time, Ben Johnson missed a penalty from in front of the sticks and they trailed 3-0 at the break.
Freddie Potrykus was denied a try by the referee, but the hosts finally broke through on 57 minutes when Willem Enslin crashed over and Johnson converted.
With time running out, Brid mounted some pressure and eventually bagged a decisive converted try.
Selby made it two wins from two in Yorkshire Two as they thrashed visitors Leodiensian 40-3.
The Swans try scorers were Jacob Robinson, Josh Cruise, Josh Greenfield (2), Ben Lunt and Alex Webster.
Cruise kicked two conversions and two penalties.
Meanwhile, York RI were beaten 54-0 at Bramley Phoenix in Yorkshire Three.
Tim Lewis and James Farnsworth led from the front for a depleted RI side.
