Woodhouse Grange lift Senior Cricket League title after bossing final day decider

Woodhouse Grange won the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League premier division crown for the 13th time – and the fourth time in five seasons – after overwhelming Dunnington in their title decider.

The nine-wicket win sealed a fourth premier division and Hunters League Cup double for the Sutton-on-Derwent-based side.

Dunnington skipper Paul Miles was playing his final game before retiring, while former West Indies international Collis King was also making his farewell appearance after a record-breaking 12 years for the club.

King was the only Dunnington batsman to make any impression as he scored 41. A lethal spell by Dave Suddaby of 5-3 ripped through visitors’ batting line-up.

With Tom Quinn taking 3-36 and Steve Burdett 2-39, Dunnington were felled for 87 in 38.5 overs.

After the first-over loss of Nick Hadfield, Chris Bilton raced to 60 not out as he and Mike Hattee, with a more circumspect 15 not out, saw Grange to victory.

Clifton Alliance took full advantage of Dunnington’s fruitless day to snatch the runners-up place after beating York by 71 runs.

Hosts Alliance were given a cracking start by Adam Slater (81) and Nick Hindle (64), who posted an opening stand of 112.

John Gilham hit 42 and John Hunter 35 as they totalled 296-6.

Mike Mortimer (3-66) was the most successful member of the attack.

In response, Gareth Fenton hit 73, Steve Jones 43 and Mark Thomas 32. Richard Carroll claimed 3-67, but a 3-11 return from three overs by wicketkeeper Rory Walker polished York off for 225.

Studley Royal relinquished fourth place when they crashed to an eight-wicket defeat at Beverley.

Studley’s Rob Nicholson hit 117 in a total of 234 all out, while Beverley’s Matt Mudd took his wicket total to 49 with a 5-83 return and Peter Groves took 4-41.

Groves then smashed 105 as he and Olly Grantham, with 106 not out, added 164 for the second wicket.

Hosts Easingwold were set on course for a 36-run victory over Selby by opening duo Martin Piercy (61) and Jonathon Marwood (49) with a stand of 111. Gareth Roberts claimed 4-65 as the hosts got 206-9.

Selby lost four wickets cheaply before Eddie Rosa (68) and Lee Wild (61) added 105 for the fourth wicket. However, Matt Turnbull (3-43), Paul Skilbeck (3-38) and Andy Metcalfe (3-22) ousted them for 170.

Sessay were relegated after a seven-wicket defeat at Sheriff Hutton Bridge. Bridge bowler Jamie Hopper took 5-27 and Mark Fisher 4-36 as Sessay were all out for 142.

Paul Oldfield (54) and Adam Fisher (42no) led the chase.

Stamford Bridge staved off the drop by getting the better of a draw against relegated Goole. Dominic Rhodes hit 112 in Bridge’s 250-4. Goole drew at 168-8.
