York City grab last-gasp leveller against Chesterfield in npower League Two

A SPECTACULAR injury-time strike from Jason Walker earned York City a 2-2 draw with Chesterfield in npower League Two.

The Minstermen appeared to be slipping to defeat at Bootham Crescent as they trailed 2-1 in the last minute of stoppage time, but Walker's shot on the turn rifled into the Spireites' net from ten yards.

The visitors had dominated the majority of the game and led thanks to goals from Sam Hird and Craig Westcarr, sandwiched either side of Michael Coulson's 40th minute goal for the home side.

On-loan Leeds full-back Charlie Taylor was given a particularly torrid time by Chesterfield's Drew Talbot, but City's never-say-die spirit earned them a point.

The draw saw Gary Mills' men move up two places to seventh in the League Two table, answering the manager's pre-match call for an assault on the play-off places.

Meanwhile, City were drawn at home to Coventry City in round two of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The tie will be played in the week beginning October 8.

Frustrating game against a team that were hard to break down especially on a hot day.

Come the end of the season that could be a big point.

Jason Walker gets his reward for tireless effort and teamwork. Respect to Chesterfield Fans for their observance of the minutes silence for David Longhurst today brought out the best on the pitch and stands. Bring on Coventry City!

A gold medal to the Groundsman again for a pitch that would not be out of place at Wembley. Aside from that the most heartening sight for me today was Scott Kerr joining the squad on the field prior to the match starting. My how York can do with this player in the line up. Mid field was again a big problem for the City as they were put to the sword in the first half. Rarely was the defence able to play the ball out with the comfort we were used to seeing last year. Taylor in particular had a torrid time with his distribution. And where were the wingers today supported by overlapping defenders. I know the heat was sapping but City were under the cosh for the first 45 and the half time score of 1-2 was a reflection of Chesterfields dominance, albeit their second goal was the result of a dreadful defensive slip which left Ingham with no chance.
City continued to play second fiddle to a well organised outfit who were fit and physical, and failed to set up a scoring opportunity until Walker produced a spectacular volleyed goal out of the blue with 16 seconds to go. Never give up on this spirited City side.
So York were fortunate. None of the players distinguished themselves but I wouldn't have liked to have played 90 minutes in that heat!
Onwards and upwards!

Just about deserved the point in a game against well organised opposition. Walker my man of the match - he seemed the only guy on the pitch looking capable of doing something different and finding a killer ball. Set up first goal and wow to the second.

5096 there - great atmosphere and the Chesterfield fans were a credit to their club during minutes silence. Conference seems like just a bad dream on afternoons like today.

Worked hard and got a draw, so I'm both impressed with City's resolve and Chesterfield's tactics. Definitely deserved the draw in my opinion - Chesterfield may have 'dominated' possession but they couldn't keep us out at the end of the day, which seems to be a recurring element of our games (e.g. at Rotherham and against Oxford). No such thing as luck in football, just hard work on a very hot day so I'm very pleased with York!

On another note, Chesterfield's support were both extremely numerous and observed the silence well, so hats off to them.

Another never say die performance from City and you felt that there was always another goal in it during the second-half and what a classy strike by Jason Walker! A lot of the time, Chesterfield did look fitter and faster and though it was hot out there, we also played some good stuff when chasing the second equaliser and we just about merited the point. All in all, a very entertaining and lively match, well worth the money and for me, Jason Walker edged the MotM award!! COYR.

We've got great spirit in this side, thats what Millsy has given us. Alright, it wasn't the greatest of displays, but look, if you can get a result when not playing well you have the makings of a good side. It's what's given Man Utd so many trophies down the years. That never say die attitude is what makes Alex Ferguson the manager he is, and I believe Millsy has the same.

I am definately pleased with a point today, I just could not see us equalising at all. The Chesterfield players reaction said it all at the final whistle. Two disappointing goals conceded did not help our cause. But well done to Jason Walker, after all the flack that he has taken recently. He had an assist for our first goal and then brought everyone to their feet with that fantastic equaliser. A good point against a decent Chesterfield team, who will surely be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Gary Mills actually did Charlie Taylor a favour by taking him off, for he really struggled today. He was not alone though, for this was not one of our usual solid defensive displays.

Entertaining it certainly was epic crowd + away support, not a classic city performance by any stretch conceding the two goals far too easily & as their keeper looked MOTM to me, made Ingy look fearful in his own 6 yard box by comparison. We always look like scoring a couple of goals but need to eliminate errors I presume C Smiths mates were todays sponsors as it was far from his best game always tempted to play long balls & not carry into space & those last few minutes he was happy to not keep the ball in play.Promising overall though just did not get it down the sides missed Mezzas overlapping runs most heartening thing was the never say die attitude we will steal many a win & point with this mind set.

We looked lightweight all over the pitch today (again) and certainly need someone with height and physical presence up front. Young Taylor looks an excellent prospect but not on todays showing. However, we stuck at it and got a result but we will not always get away with it like we have so far this season.

Disagree with you on that one mate. I thought Chris Smith was outstanding. Some of his interceptoins and tackles were crucial , I think he played a proper captains game today. think some of the other back four players were far more guilty of playing long ball than him. Jason Walker had another great game and got a fantastic equalliser. We've got to realise that we are'nt going to destroy everybody who comes to BC , so we've got to put a decent shift in to get something out of those types of game, like todays...... We are now 7th. I can see how you can draw your conclusion generally his heading was good & young Taylor looked vulnerable at times but I have a nervy time with him on the pitch, having seen him blow the game at Tamworth last season all on his own.
Just think if you look at his play out from the back he hardly ever brings the ball out at feet into space to draw in opponents I just do not feel that in a team designed to play the ball on the ground he offers enough Danny P much better we have looked poor for the last couple of seasons at CB & we continue to leak too many goals, Carlisle is an excellent option at CB really a shrewd signing.

Almost hard to believe, but I arrived at BC fairly early today, to watch the players warm up. Someone took a wayward shot, and knocked the 'D' clean off the stand roof. Terrible timing, but nothing that the club could do about it - you should be able to see the displaced letter near the goal in highlights.

It was Reid, just shows the quality of his shooting from outside the 6 yard box! lol

I thought we deserved a point today even with so many players under performing. IMO i would of taken off Blair because Coulson looked more of a threat today. Carlisle is an excellent signing. The big difference this year is that any mistakes are punished.

The capacity for the new stadium is a bit of a tricky one. Yes 6,000 will be fine for most games, but what if we get promoted again? Our biggest home gates this season will probably be against Bradford and Rotherham. We don't want to make the same mistake as Darlington, a ground that holds 10,000 is more realistic.

I think that you not only owe the sponsers of yesterdays game an apology but also C .Smith. Yesterday he had a very good game, he had several attempts on goal and provided the inch perfect pass for Jason to pass to Coulson to score, then at the last gasp he made a fantastic header back to Jason to get the leveller, as well as generally playing the ball out to the feet of his team mates intercepting passes and many successfull challenges, you need to move seats/stands so as to get a better view / perspective of the game. Then you will see that Smith is not a hoofer. On so many occasions you come on here bleating the same story, I quote "look what C.Smith did at Tamworth" . A team is made up of a blend of players, of whom almost all at some point will have a bad games or go through a bad patch, Smith did have a bad patch for the first 3rd of last season by his own addission and we are all aware of it but most of us live and let live, you should try to do the same. City are riding high at the moment and I like most city supporters want that to continue but not at the cost of trolling or stalking individuals. Mills will make changes /drop players when needs be,you mark my words, he did it last season and he has already done it this season. He will do what he needs to do when he thinks things need to be changed.get behind the whole team, yes it's fine to be critical but stop picking on the same player all the time. That really did end up feeling like a win after the late goal. Ok it was not our greatest performance and we seriously need to come out for the first half of games up for it rather than having to fight back second half as we often did last season. What you can't knock though is the fighting spirit of the team and well done Walker who I feel has had far too much stick this season. We seriously missed Paddy in midfield and in all honestly I dont think Coulson ended up the right player to replace him, what is encouraging though is we still have Kerr to come when fit. Taylor sadly had a complete mare of a game. but it's a learning curve for him. Lastly a 5000 plus crowd makes a mockery of a new 6000 capacity stadium, good to read that the club are challenging this capacity based on our early gates this season, yesterday won't have do e that any harm.

Would be nice to think that the ground manager will get the lettering back in place at the very earliest opportunity, together with sorting out the baleful noise that comes out of the PA system in the David Longhurst Stand and which passes for a working system - it is poor quality and requires a proper examination and improvement.

Although I did not purchase a programme yesterday it was said to include this.

The size of our gate and increasing number of supporters is so important for the team but is also of huge benefit for our discussions with the city of York Council and is providing important evidence for our push for an increased capacity in the new stadium proposals.

Maybe someone who did purchase one can confirm this ?

Iro the match I think that we had a pretty bad day at the office all round, however, it was great that we didn't give up and Walker deserved a goal for the shifts he's been putting in of late. I am hoping that it was just down to a fair few below par performances and missing Paddy yesterday, however, I was concerned with how hungry Chesterfield looked in comparison to us. I was especially worried about our left back.... I don't want to have a go at such a young player, but I'm not sure what Neil Warnock would have thought if he was at the ground yesterday... The left back position is probably the main one we seem to have got into an awkward position on. It would have been nice to see a quality replacement for Mez but it's looking more and more like we are now going to have to wait for the January transfer window before Mills can bring someone else in permanently.

Agreed Duffy... It may be a bit leftfield (pardon the pun!) but I'd personally prefer to see Challinor have a stint at left back...he is very right footed but he has a great footballing head on his shoulders and is as committed as anyone in the squad and knows about holding a back four line, making an overlap etc. etc. Worth a thought or complete madness?

Stranger things have happened. Problem with Challinor when he played at right back was a slight lack of pace though, I imagine it would be the same at left back.

Chesterfield must still be gutted - why did they not just take it into our end and retain possession in the corners? Instead of that a bouncing back pass changed the mindsets and helps us equalise.
