10:33am Tuesday 4th September 2012 in Sport
HOLDERS Jill McCreedy and Jill Rounce rapped out a warning to their challengers as they qualified for the final stages of the 23rd annual Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League IT Sports Tournament.
The Fulford double act won 33 games to emerge as the top qualifiers from group ‘B’.
They will be joined in the finals on Saturday, September 15 by Cliffe’s Jane Pemberton and Liz Bramley, of Bubwith, after they won 21 games.
The group ‘A’ qualifiers were Fulford’s Pauline Craddock and Wendy Cook, who won 30 games, and Castlegarth pair Helen Robinson and Sue Perkins, with 27 games.
Wilberfoss duo Christine Thomas and Linda Parkin got off to a superb start in group ‘A’ with a 5-2 win in the first round, while their club-mates, Michele Helm and Caroline Gaines, had a 4-3 win in the second round.
Carolyn Taylor and Katie Harrison, of Fulford, won 6-1 in the third round, but no one could live with Craddock and Cook, who had a 7-0 win in the fifth round, and number two seeds Robinson and Perkins, who also notched a 7-0 success.
Top seeds McCreedy and Rounce dominated group ‘B’, despite Tollerton’s Sandra Jennings and Ed Hope enjoying a 7-0 victory in the first round.
Fulford’s Elizabeth Mallory and Anna Baker bagged a 5-2 victory, while Christine Edmond and Denise Reilly, of Rufforth , scored an identical win in the third round.
McCreedy and Rounce were in sparkling form in a 7-0 win, while the last round saw Pemberton and Bramley clinch their finals spot only one game ahead of Mallory and Baker.
