Steve Patterson stars in Yorkshire's stunning start against Gloucestershire

STEVE Patterson took three wickets with the new ball as Yorkshire made an breathless start to their LV= County Championship division two match against Gloucestershire at Scarborough today.

Patterson and Moin Ashraf, sharing the new ball with Ryan Sidebottom out with a back injury, combined to reduce the visitors to 9-4 inside ten overs following Hamish Marshall’s decision to bat first, with swing playing a particularly prominent role.

Since then, Iain Cockbain and Will Gidman have shared an unbroken 61 for the fifth wicket to take the score to 70-4 from 31 overs at lunch. Cockbain is 28 not out and Will Gidman is 30.

Patterson started the ball rolling by bowling Benny Howell as he shouldered arms in the fifth over before Dan Housego was caught at second slip by Adam Lyth in the seventh and Marshall trapped lbw in the ninth.

Ashraf then had New Zealand opener Rob Nicol caught behind by on-loan wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd.

Prior to play Joe Root and Gary Ballance were presented with their county caps.
