York City off the mark with 3-1 League Two win at Barnet

YORK City are celebrating their first win since returning to the Football League after beating Barnet 3-1.

The Minstermen took the lead through Dan Parslow after seven minutes of the League Two Underhill clash and Ashley Chambers made it 2-0 nine minutes later.

The hosts pulled a goal back through Jonathan Nurse on 29 minutes but Michael Coulson netted a third for City just before the break.

The game was held up for almost ten minutes in the second half as Nurse received treatment for an injury before being stretchered off.

That's a very big 3 points for city and will have done the players no harm at all. Parslow again sounding like he did well.Ok Barnet are probably going to be down the bottom again, however I would not have liked to have seen us going into the home game against a storming Oxford with only one point. Just need to see if Mills can strengthen us further in the next week.

I here Doig is out with a hamstring injury. Sadly he was always a risk with his injury record but that's another blow to the defence.

Sounds like we played well and could have had more. Parslow is once again keeping his critics quiet, if he keeps this up he'll be player of the season again. Anyone know how far McGurk is from returning?

Delighted with the points - a game we were expected to go and win and we did. Pressure off a little.

Still need that commanding centre-back some of us have been wanting for over a year - maybe now with Doig doing the inevitable and breaking down again.

Come on Mr Mills - a couple last pieces of the jigsaw in next few days, CB and striker.

Why do we need another striker when we got enough players who can score.

Well done good win yes against a team who are likely to occupy the bottom quarter of league two but good confidence boost to get 3 only concede 1. My comments about Danny P ring true in the "City boss Mills hails Parslow’s fightback role" comments. GM has I am sure been looking for the right players to add to the squad but as we saw last season transfer in haste & repent at leisure we signed very few good players & ended up with a big squad containing too many indifferent players. Much better to use our current squad to good effect & get the right player for us signed as we need a good plan b, c & d when Walker is cancelled out.
Great weekend for City with an epic away following & Luton lost so happy days. Cmon City!!!

Living down south I hardly ever get to a game, but was able to get to today's. For those who couldn't go it was a very good performance. Parslow was outstanding and Walker held the ball and linked the line very well with Coulson working off him very well too. Defence looks a bit vulnerable to crosses and maybe full backs weren't too hot, but very encouraging for someone who hardly ever sees them play. Quality looks good to me!

Agree that Danny Parslow was excellent today; the goal gave him so much more confidence and at least an extra yard of pace. Walker worked very hard and created a couple of really good chances. How Jonathan Smith managed to miss his header but him ending up in the back of the net was beyond belief. Barnet had a bit of pace and even at 2-0 the game wasn't over. We sat back on the 3-1 lead to a certain extent and all it needed was a Barnet goal and we would have had a nail biting finish. Sadly game tarnished by the bad injury to Nurse (their scorer) who looked in a bad way when stretchered off - game held up for nearly 10 minutes. All credit to City supporters who applauded him off the pitch. Poor home crowd today but good support for City - will be interesting to see the away attendance figures. Looking at the league table tonight; would be quite happy for us to be in that position after 46 games as I see this season as a season of consolidation. Great result though and a good solid team performance. Blanchett was however beaten for pace for their goal.

Agree with your objective assessment. Blanchett very weak and Banjo's positional sense questionable. However, Parslow, Paddy and Smith were immense.

A couple of fullbacks, another striker and a centre back next week and we'll have a decent go of it.

Great performance against a very poor team.

If Doig is out for a while Mills is probably forced into a signing now. McGurk is still not fit and he won't move Parslow. All that leaves is Fyfield for both a centre back and left back position given he substituted Blanchett early today after his mistake for the goal. That or he plays Bullock at centre half.

Good call Duffy, you were spot-on with your 3-1 prediction! Dave McGurk can't be too far off full fitness but of course he will need time to get fully match fit.Though Danny Parslow is playing v.well in front of the Back Four, think he will go back into a central defensive role with Chris Smith and cover for Doig.We need to be nice and tight at the back for the next two home games and can't see a better central pairing than these two.!

Doig is at the stage in his career where he will always struggle with injuries. But I would be surprised if the Manager signed another Centre Back. We have Parslow, Bullock, Oyebanjo and Fyfield who have all played games at Centre Back. Ironically it will probably be too soon for Dave McGurk just yet, GM wont want to rush him back.

Really? Parslow with two MOM performances in midfield moved to centre half? Doubt it.

Fyfield, publically admonished on a number of occasions by Mills as centre half? Probably not.

Bullock - legs gone and a part time defender at best? Could be...

Would be surprised if we don't sign a CH on loan in the v near future.

a great result for city, i was always confident we'd get a result but was particularly impressed with the goals we scored.
we need to go to a club as we did with Middlesbrough & Gibson. go and get a centre-half who can be with us for the whole season, a player who has some decent experience but still young, like Gibbo.
McGurk is still a while away and I really don't fancy Fyfield at centre-back against teams like Oxford & Chesterfield. at the minute I would put Parslow back in there against the U's on Saturday.

Maybe, but surely scoring 2 goals at Wembley will have done enough to get other clubs interested (if they are).

Coulson seems to be playing well, but should he be starting ahead of Blair?Just seems strange that the star player of the last half of the season and top goal scorer can't get a full game.

Remember Blair was dropped at times last season before his storming end to the season. It's an area we are very strong in and Mills obviously rates Coulson. Personally I have always thought Coulson a good player and I'm not sure there is that much between the two players.

Agreed Coulson is a decent player. Blair isn't yet 90 minutes fit and with his injury it would be folly to take too many unnecessary risks against weaker opposition.
I hope they soon sort out the internet commentary. I look forward to the opportunity to listen to a decent away commentator. Mr.Parker yesterday: "here's danger"... "there's still danger" - not a hint of an explanation or description of what might be occuring. Later after a City break away - "it must be a goal !" - it wasn't. Other reports don't mention the incident which again wasn't defined by our comedy compere. What's Alistair Yeoman doing these days - can't Five live spare him on Saturdays/Tuesdays?
As far as the team goes -still finding their tempo. Stronger second options along the spine would benefit but nothing too alarming so far and Danny Parslow has certainly made the step up on current evidence. Chambers is growing in influence and hopefully the confidence to take risks. Others don't look out of place but need to keep concentration and not get caught out of position. The next month will give us a much better idea of what to expect.

Agree with Blanchett timing; he joined an attack and really struggled to get back when the move broke down, which put us under a bit of pressure and saw one or two players pulled out of position to cover. GM took him off shortly thereafter. As I said in an earlier post, he was beaten for pace for their goal. On the day probably our weakest player. He may need to put a few extra training shifts in this week. Let's not make a final decision on him just yet - it took Mez a few months to settle in and then he took off.

Another fan said exactly that on the train back yesterday. Blanchett was at fault for the goal and made some wayward passes. Taken off shortly after the break when we were 3-1 up which suggests GM thought he was vulnerable.

However, as mentioned Mezza took time to settle in. The counterargument to that is so did Blinkhorn, Hendo and Ashikodi!

Chambers is growing in influence and hopefully the confidence to take risks. Others don't look out of place but need to keep concentration and not get caught out of position. The next month will give us a much better idea of what to expect.
Barry Parker is legend! Yes he occasionally wanders off but he has passion for the team good knowledge about the players and the league and asks the manager sensible questions. He is miles better than the guy who replaced him a while back who knew nothing and cared less than he knew.

But we need to sort online commentary asap - is there some way of lobbying for this to happen or is it just a case of waiting for a new website as some have suggested? Why can't the Football League (or whoever holds the rights) give Radio York a temporary licence to broadcast until the new arrangements are in place?

It is amazing just what a win by any means can do for confidence. We will not get worse, just better.
